Job Summary:

The Transportation and Logistics Supervisor is responsible for all logistics throughout the Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB) six county service territory. This person is responsible for the hiring, training and managing of all the drivers; maintaining an effective safety program; maintaining the vehicle fleet while supporting the operation of SHFB; and coordinating the transportation schedule in SHFB warehouse for food deliveries to member agencies, backhauls from food donors, food drives, special events, and other transportation related activities as needed.


Essential Functions:

Transportation Logistics, Maintenance and Compliance

Oversees and coordinates transportation & logistics activities for SHFB

Schedules daily routes for drivers as well as provide directions/maps, if necessary, to ensure the most efficient movement of product

Leads in development and implementation of organizational policies related to transportation logistics

Develops goals, performance metrics and management for best practices in transportation. Mentors team members in the creation and implementation of metrics to achieve process improvement.

Manages and provides supervision to the delivery drivers. Leads team effectively, including assigning and monitoring daily work, cross-training employees, and developing staff.

Coordinates with warehouse personnel to enhance delivery staging and truck loading procedures; assist with truck loading process when needed to ensure accuracy.

Plans, organize, and oversees the inbound and outbound logistics of SHFB product, ensuring transportation costs are optimized and within budget.

Works with food sourcing staff to schedule accepted CHOICE loads and other food donations

Manages and reviews all drivers' logs and ensure that daily vehicle inspections are complete; maintains log of all vehicle servicing and repairs

Coordinates food deliveries to agencies by assuring the correct number of trucks and drivers are assigned.

Manages all drivers paid time off requests to assure proper coverage for all deliveries and backhaul opportunities.

Oversees proper maintenance of vehicles to ensure compliance with external regulatory bodies, making employee, volunteer and food safety top priorities.

Compares service options when maintaining vehicles with costs and quality of service in consideration

Reconciles all billings from vendors on vehicle repairs/maintenance

Maintains updated list of all vehicles, ensuring any changes are communicated for insurance purposes

Ensures all vehicles are up to date with registration and state inspections

Proposes, reviews, make recommendations and implement all vehicle fleet enhancements including utilization of technology such as GPS, EZ Pass accounts, camera and other necessary equipment and hardware/software systems to maximize effectiveness and efficiencies.

Ensures all donor pickups and agency deliveries are completed on time and anything late is communicated.

Performs light maintenance of vehicles including fluid checks; ensures maintenance is performed on vehicles for safe operation and completes proper inspection and maintenance paperwork for reporting purposes.

Ensures compliance with Department of Transportation, federal, state and local requirements.

During periods of short staffing, driver illness, paid time off or leave of absence, occasionally drive trucks to make pickups and deliveries.

Operate forklifts, pallet jacks and other warehouse equipment, as needed

Assists with the development of the operations budget and manages expenses within the approved budget



Leadership and Management:

Evaluates and implements safety, equipment and other training needs of transportation staff.

Demonstrates a clear understanding of internal and external customers by listening and responding to their needs in a timely manner. Be an outstanding customer service role model.

Ensures that responsibilities are defined and understood and accountability is maintained.

Creates a positive work environment where two-way open communication and a strong sense of trust is established.

Emphasizes teamwork so team members understand the importance of assisting in other areas.

Ensures each team member is fully trained on the skills necessary for them to succeed.

Ensure workload is distributed equitably, monitoring overtime and task assignments.

Provides backup management for Warehouse Supervisor.

Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, planning assigning and directing work, addressing complaints and resolving problems. Ensure the transportation team is staffed appropriately by hiring strong team members and evaluating and developing existing staff.

Must be detail-oriented, with the ability to plan, prioritize, take initiative, resolve problems, meet deadlines and multi-task

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly required to stand and walk.
  • Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 70 pounds
  • Tolerance of exposure to extreme temperatures.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Two years' experience in warehouse work

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Food industry experience preferred
  • Experience with Warehouse Software systems

Additional Requirements:

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Ability to organize and keep accurate records, and to perform basic mathematical calculations

Valid driver's license and good driving record required

PA Dept. of Transportation medical certification required within 30 days of start date

Certification in safe food handling required within 6 months of start date

Personal vehicle or access to independent transportation required

Must acquire CDL Class B (Class A preferred) with 3 months of start date

PA State Police criminal record check required

Child Abuse History Clearance required

FBI Criminal History background check required
